Ashley replies:   Hi Lisa--
Great to see you this summer at Laity Lodge (or, as my ten year old referred to it: Larry Lodge). Thanks for the Nouwen book--I have been a bit crazy with work over the rest of the summer but I look forward to reading it. Have a great fall!

Ashley replies:   Hi Sherry--
I think it's a killer website too--all kudos go to Rose--I have trouble just getting here and still write most of my mail by hand.

Ashley,

Big fan of yours, originally from Chattanooga, came to Nashville almost 3 years ago to be a part of the songwriting community (which is a much more realistic goal than "get published" or "make a living in music," you'll notice; I may be a dreamer but I'm no fool).

As the second person to post here, I guess I feel like that guy that stepped on the moon after Neil Armstrong (what was his name?). I just happened to drop in to the site to check the tour schedule, because I noticed on Bob Bennett's site that you, Bob and Bruce Carroll are doing a tour together--a definite "can't miss" for any thinking, feeling music lover!

Being in Nashville is a double-edged sword for music fans, because there's always great music going on, so you get to enjoy it...but there's a tendency to take it for granted, too. Also, you tend to see the seamy side of some of these cultural icons, which also has its good and bad sides. I've seen that you have managed by grace to develop a sterling reputation in town in both the Christian and not-so-Christian communities, both because of your artistry and because you seem to make extra effort to be honest about your weaknesses as well as your faith. I loved what you said on Brian Mason's radio show about how all musicians are showoffs, no matter how humble we try to be! Amen!

I'll never forget seeing you perform at Tower Records, and hearing you sing the line "Jesus Christ is all I know"--and knowing that even the most hardened cynic in the room could not claim you were "pushing your religion" on anyone; if that cynic were honest, he/she would admit that you make the Gospel not only plausible but downright attractive. A couple of conversations I've had with you only confirm my opinion of you.

I'm sharing this mostly for the sake of your other site visitors; I hope it doesn't become a stumbling block to your ego, or I'll have to take it all back! HA!! Keep up the good work.

Grace & Peace,
Mark

What a lovely letter--thank you for taking the time to write to me and I hope you'll come to the show on September 9th with Bruce and Bob. If you do, please say hello. Hope your songwriting is flourishing! AC
